Like me, many have come to the realization that their life calling is to help others become the best version of themselves and to ease their burdens. Can we still make money? Of course! There are many people who are here helping others such as therapists, life coaches, medical practitioners, police officers, firemen, etc. Yet unfortunately, many of us choose jobs and careers based on how much money we will make rather than if our path will truly make us happy.
Following your life path:
Following your life path:
Many of us go about life just going through the motions. We aim towards a life that is suitable; but suitable for who?
Many of our desires are not inherently what we desire for ourselves, rather what we have been taught to be desirable. We call this, the American dream. We go to school, we learn how to pass a test about random facts (or lies) that suit the American purpose of feeding the capitalist machine.
We learn through our capitalist system that it is imperative to keep up with the Jones’. That we must have the latest Iphone, latest model car, biggest house, etc. But who are we keeping up appearances for?
Since birth, we are bombarded by media ads that tell us what we should strive for, buy, drive, look like, etc. We live a life trying to attain riches to be able to afford nothing more than an ad.
No wonder we are unhappy and stressed! Do you know how difficult it is to attain that which is not truly wanted! I say not truly wanted because most of our desires stem from brain washing. We were not born wanting Jordan's, Porsche's, or Rolex's. We were born wanting nurturing, companionship, love, food, and security. Somehow, we were tricked into thinking that these basic needs are unimportant. And if they are important, then they can be branded in a free market at competitive prices.
We do not follow our life path because we do not know what it is. We have lost our way behind the ads, politics, and senseless competition. Our life path is clouded by the things we feel we ought to be pursuing, and our pursuit then becomes tied to something economically appealing.
We have become very adapt to settling. Our actual desires get put on the back burner in the face of adult responsibility. We learn that life is a thing to survive if you do not have a workable skill! That is nonsense! Life is to be enjoyed not survived! How is it that it has become acceptable to be born a slave to the dollar? Is that the American dream? What is sad is that this mentality somehow seems right and just to the majority of the populace!
There is nothing wrong with monetary wealth. But do not let it corrupt your decency and do not let the fear of poverty sway you from your intended life path. Instead, learn to play the game and capitalize on your true desire. It is okay to make money; and lots of it! But do it while staying true to who you are and do no harm! What good is it to be a successful defense attorney or litigator when you are freeing murderers and incarcerating the innocent? Yes you may be successful but you are selling your soul at what price? Lastly, if you do not know what your life purpose is, stop trying so much to be successful. Enjoy the things that make you happy, let life happen, and you will see how your purpose unfolds before you.

This reminds me of the concept of a meme. I don’t mean a witty phrase on silly picture. This concept was popularized in The Selfish Gene, by Richard Dawkins (1976).
ReplyDeleteA meme I using this concept is,” a mental belief or behavior learned from others.”, “a unit of cultural information”.
The beliefs we adopt from others or other external influences. Memes go through evolution and survival of the fittest. However, they don’t break down biologically like all our physical bodies do. The memes we adopt can even cause our bodies to break down (e.g., commercials showing artificially created depictions of food that so convenient and affordable ultimately leads to more people eating fast-food). I would also say that memes can also cause our psychological well being to break down. The meme of always trying to keep up with the latest technology keeps people buying the same things repeatedly. Tech companies continuously roll out new products and have release schedules planned years in advance. Tech companies have very successfully implanted a belief that you must have the latest tech and you will be judged by what you have. The truth is that it is not attainable because it’s a moving target. How real is that gratification of buying the newest cellphone? How long will it last? It’s a stacked deck. People must work so many hours away from people they love at jobs they may or may not care about to buy things they will be outdated within months. I hate the concept of being a slave to money. I fantasize about living off the land, and spending my time near those I love hunting, gathering, and growing what we need.
My compromise is that I do believe in the work I spend my time on because it’s in service to others. My wife and I both have worked hard to reach where we are at. We are thankful for being able to work primarily from. Nowadays the money I earn will be going to things that emphasize sustainability for both health (mental and physical) and energy and water resources.
I recognized that it felt like I was “selling my soul”, and I changed my path to end up in a happier place. I didn’t know where it would take me, but it really did unfold it such a positive way. Recognizing that I would do more for others than I would do for myself was a tipping point. I knew that if I spent my efforts trying to help make others successful then I to would find some level of success.
very lovely indeed! I am aware of Dawkins conceptualization of meme. You are absolutely right that industries market goods at a rate that is impossible to keep up with. It keeps them rich and the rest of us chasing their dreams! Because after all that is all we are doing when we buy brand name; we are systematically feeding into their American dream while we remain in poverty. I am so glad you have stepped away from the matrix long enough to see the big picture. I am also glad you found a calling that is both fulfilling and helps others. Keep on that path and I will do the same until we reach the masses.
